Scarlett and Mammy WERE Atlanta. Guess who killed Rhett Butler? I mean, you may say that it's easy to evoke the sense and spirit of a place, but New Orleans is so vivid, so extraordinary, that bringing the place to life is much less difficult than, say, Worcester, Massachusetts (where my last novel was set). And even then, I'm not sure I'd agree that it's "easy" (despite the play on the city's nickname!). You're just good at it!

I do agree with you that characters are often defined by their place. My character Stella, in Exposure, has spent her whole life in Pittsburgh, and that has shaped her personality and her point of view. She's tough and self-reliant, grounded in her ethnic roots, but at the same time just a bit starry-eyed in a city that has had its share of dreamers.

Thanks for joining us at the Grip!

Warmly,
LisabetLisabet Saraihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05162514190572269660noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9156334464585894857.post-69865634077518556472010-03-27T12:43:29.818-04:002010-03-27T12:43:29.818-04:00I love your Scotty mysteries.
