I make a conscious effort to read a wide variety of books, and I'm happy that comes through. :)

I really enjoy having to work a bit while reading a book. It feels good. It reminds me of the Dune series which was interesting for a lot of us because it was so rich with anthropological ideas and tangents.

GarceGarceushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11160407485298015371noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9156334464585894857.post-31647083811082351272016-11-18T07:52:54.215-05:002016-11-18T07:52:54.215-05:00I love your posts, Annabeth. And your comments on ours.

Lots here, but the scifi comment hit me because I've been reading Greg Bear's ETERNITY, and feeling REALLY frustrated because I believe he doesn't explain enough of what's going on. It's made worse by the fact that there are multiple terms people use for the same phenomenon or object. Maybe I've just become impatient, but I think part of author's responsibility is to communicate the basics. It's great to stimulate the reader's curiosity and make her wonder... up to a point. IMHO Bear is way past that point.Lisabet Saraihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05162514190572269660noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9156334464585894857.post-5187692204984181042016-11-17T22:51:55.860-05:002016-11-17T22:51:55.860-05:00An inspirationally diverse reading list. You've put your finger on why sci-fi is hard to read AND to write: how much world-building can a writer do while avoiding the dreaded info-dump? And I'm sure the history of the vote is interesting, even though depressing. The whole concept of a universal vote is based on the 18th-century concept of "the rights of man" (sometimes extended to women, often not), which was never really accepted by the ruling class in any era. Double standards and hypocrisy abound. But knowledge is definitely helpful in fighting for social justice.Jean Robertahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08805088081675965859noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9156334464585894857.post-66014707633218976012016-11-17T11:16:59.835-05:002016-11-17T11:16:59.835-05:00Wide range here, Annabeth. Have I ever mentioned how much I like well-rounded? :>)

You said-

...I think there are conventions to being a modern science fiction reader. One is that there’s often very little handholding. You’re plunged into a vastly unfamiliar world, and it’s your job as a reader to work hard and piece together what’s going on....

DX- Bada bing. Just posted "How much to tell' on the ERWA "Writers" list. How much latitude to allow the reader? Do we spell everything out for them, so our intentions are concrete? Or do we give our readers some credit, allow them enough (who's to say how much is enough?) material to extrapolate our intentions from hints and suggestions? Personally, when I feel my imagination and powers of deduction are involved in reading and understanding a book, the read would be more personalized for me.Daddy Xhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12927663248424944119noreply@blogger.com
