Somewhere on social media, I found a recording of an instrumental song that someone claimed to be the oldest known song, from about 3,000 years ago. Lisabet and I have written in this blog about how we were both exposed to Gilbert and Sullivan operettas at young ages, and the anapestic/dactylic beat of the "patter songs" from those jolly Victorian shows has found its way into some of our structured poems.

I've tried to explain metre to my first-year university students when discussing poetry, but some of them seem to have no ear for it.Jean Robertahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08805088081675965859noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9156334464585894857.post-14339965936993533352019-02-03T12:24:32.853-05:002019-02-03T12:24:32.853-05:00Impressive!Impressive!Jean Robertahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08805088081675965859noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9156334464585894857.post-86211569112927434882019-02-03T12:23:30.122-05:002019-02-03T12:23:30.122-05:00Ha.Ha.Jean Robertahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08805088081675965859noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9156334464585894857.post-7797593387212841812019-02-03T12:23:16.802-05:002019-02-03T12:23:16.802-05:00Good question! I never got farther back than a smattering of Latin. I once did a lot of research about Sappho, since I wanted to write an alternate history story wherein a long-lost trove of pottery, amphorae, etc., is discovered in a submerged cave on Lesbos, with never-before-seen poetry by Sappho engraved into the pottery. But I had to give up the idea when I realized that I'd need to write at least a few of the new-found lines supposedly by Sappho, and I didn't have the chutz-pah, never mind the skill.Sacchi Greenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10801164916418570059noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9156334464585894857.post-16601485771299553122019-01-29T10:23:55.843-05:002019-01-29T10:23:55.843-05:00I would send you an anonymous Sapphic stanza in an...I would send you an anonymous Sapphic stanza in ancient Lesbian Greek, but I'm afraid you might guess the author's identity.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9156334464585894857.post-67146429757549296022019-01-29T08:24:13.177-05:002019-01-29T08:24:13.177-05:00By the way, when is the new book coming out?By the way, when is the new book coming out?Lisabet Saraihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05162514190572269660noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9156334464585894857.post-76880595761424228182019-01-29T08:23:37.171-05:002019-01-29T08:23:37.171-05:00This is gorgeous!
