I had wings, horns, a cleverly done blindfold that allowed me to (somewhat) see through it, a wig, a tattooed muscle shirt, a loin cloth, leather pants, and a war glaive. Plenty of people at the party did not recognize me until I talked.Annabeth Leonghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07455191827664110878noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9156334464585894857.post-41858333724507193592016-11-16T17:38:27.111-05:002016-11-16T17:38:27.111-05:00Yes, the gender complexities of shakespearean play...Yes, the gender complexities of shakespearean plays really boggle the mind.Annabeth Leonghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07455191827664110878noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9156334464585894857.post-46083867044685005732016-11-16T17:32:33.101-05:002016-11-16T17:32:33.101-05:00Illidan Stormrage is definitely a compelling chara...Illidan Stormrage is definitely a compelling character!

I don't generally take pictures of myself/have pictures taken of me unless I'm forced to by some circumstance. It's not that I'm self conscious about how I look in them, it's that I'm impatient with the process and I don't particularly value having them around. So for most things I do, there's no photographic evidence. I like to rely on description, because it often feels truer to me. Is it really weirder than being a starship pilot, or something else you're not?Annabeth Leonghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07455191827664110878noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9156334464585894857.post-40531864290796502992016-11-06T12:50:35.811-05:002016-11-06T12:50:35.811-05:00I would have loved to see your costume too, Annabe...I would have loved to see your costume too, Annabeth. The picture you posted looks quite elaborate. (A colleague of mine made a Pokemon costume for her older son, who is about 8. She complained to me about how much work it was, but said the son was interested in the sewing process, which seems like a good thing -- re breaking out of gender roles.)In a costume like that, I wonder if observers could even guess whether the person underneath was male or female. (I'm reminded of Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones who defeats men when both are in armour - then there is a gasp from onlookers when she removes her helmet.)Jean Robertahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08805088081675965859noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9156334464585894857.post-16203583074101961002016-11-05T15:18:27.432-04:002016-11-05T15:18:27.432-04:00It wasn't just ancient Greeks. Elizabethan actors played female roles because females weren't allowed on the stage, and weren't, of course, allowed to play male roles--which made Shakespearian plays--where female characters pretending to be male were played by male actors pretending to be females pretending to be males--all the more interesting.
