Accident

I've never had a near-death experience of the type JP described last week. I did get in a car accident once that scared me more than anything else. At the time, I used to soothe and/or entertain myself by writing songs, and I wrote one extrapolating a much worse scenario than the one I was in—the character in the song has indeed had a close brush with death, and maintains a continuing relationship with it. I call the song "Accident."

For a long time, I had a fantasy that I would figure out how to arrange music to go with the lyrics and vocal lines I wrote, but it's been years and I still haven't. So here it is raw, with apologies for the poor quality of the recording:

  1. Thanx for that, Annabeth-

Wow, what a light, lilting voice, so disarming as to the heavy content.

  2. ? I don't see a link to any sound file. (But then, my computer that I use for browsing doesn't have sound anyway...)

Maybe you could send me an MP3 or something off the blog, Annabeth.

    2. Bummer. I was very proud to have figured out how to embed a sound file, and I tested several players before finding one that didn't come up blank for me. I did, however, only test on Safari and Firefox on a Mac, so perhaps this is what I get. Thanks for letting me know!

This link should take you to the mp3: http://www.annabetherotica.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/AccidentAnnabethLeong.mp3

(I again tested that on Safari and Firefox, so if it doesn't, le sigh)

    3. (Removed double-post. Blogger doesn't seem to be my friend today.)

I'll also e-mail you the mp3, Lisabet, since I just noticed you said you don't have sound on your browsing computer.

  3. Annabeth, the sound came through perfectly on my home computer. My school computer helpfully posted a message that it wasn't equipped to let me listen to your file -- though I did see something at the end of your post, so I knew what it was. Different programs.
I like the contrast of the melodic voice, explaining the situation to listeners who clearly don't understand, with the intense content. There is clearly a kind of melody (reminiscent of talking blues), so I'm not sure what you mean by saying you would like to arange music to go with the lyrics, but haven't done it yet. Were you thinking of a song for several instruments as well as voice?

    1. Oh good, I'm glad it worked for you.

And thanks for the comments on the song! Yeah, what I meant is that I wish I could arrange musical backing. For a while, I tried to figure out how to match guitar chords to my songs and stuff like that, but I don't quite have the ear for it and I'm actually not sure if I want to pair with a guitar. Recently, I've been talking to a friend about doing a really stripped-down backing, maybe just drums and a little bass (sort of like the kind of thing you'll hear behind Lorde). Not sure if I'll get around to it, but if I do, it'll be fun!
