The Universality of Tears by Suz deMello

Most humans, being species-centric, believe that we are the only animals capable of crying. (We also used to believe we're the only creatures who make tools, but that's been disproven for some time. But that's the subject of another blog, sometime, somewhere).

Many beings cry when facing death.

Many beings cry when dealing with loss.

There's so much sorrow in the world, but tears aren't just about sadness.
Many beings cry with joy when attaining freedom:

And they cry when reunited with a loved one:

  1. Honestly, I didn't know animals cried from sorrow.

I've never seen my cats cry...

  2. We share more than just the earth with our fellow beings.

Momma X was named "Volunteer of the Year" by our local Audubon Society for her activism in 2015.

  3. Animals don't always cry in the same way, but even cats will mourn the loss of their kittens, or long-time companion cats. I suppose it depends on one's definition of crying, but any living thing that experiences emotions--and who are we to know whether even living things like trees may have emotions?--can feel the overflowing surge of emotions that causes crying.

  4. And this post made me cry... Suz, you're deadly effective with the visual imagery.

    1. ((hugs)) Annabeth, I feel very strongly about animal abuse, especially of domesticated animals. Abusing a dog or cat is an immense betrayal.
